Thai Massage vs. Oil Massage: What's the Difference?

Two of the most popular treatments, and how to pick between them based on what you actually want out of the hour.

Both are massages, both last roughly the same length of time, and both are genuinely relaxing — but they're built around different techniques and leave you feeling quite different afterwards.

Thai massage

Traditional Thai massage is active rather than passive. You stay clothed, and your therapist works through a series of acupressure points and assisted stretches along the body's energy lines. It's closer to guided yoga than a typical spa massage, and it's a good fit if you're stiff, tight, or want something that leaves you feeling loosened up and mobile rather than sleepy.

Oil massage

Oil massage is the more familiar Western-style treatment — long, flowing strokes using scented oil, performed while you lie mostly still. It's a gentler, more passive experience, and it tends to be the better choice if what you actually want is to switch off and drift for an hour.

Which one should you pick?

If you're not sure, it comes down to what you want from the session. Want to feel stretched out and energised afterwards? Thai massage. Want to feel like you've had a proper nap? Oil massage. Can't decide — most places, including ours, offer a combination of both in a single session.
