The Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage

Why scent is such a big part of an oil massage, and what to know before choosing a blend.

Aromatherapy massage is built around the same long, flowing strokes as a standard oil massage — the difference is in the oil itself. Essential oils are chosen partly for how they feel on the skin and partly for their scent, which plays a real role in how relaxed you feel by the end of the session.

Why scent matters

Smell is closely tied to the parts of the brain involved in mood and memory, which is part of why a scented massage can feel more immersive than an unscented one. Different blends are generally associated with different moods — some lean calming, others feel brighter or more energising.

Choosing a blend

If you're not familiar with essential oils, it's worth just asking your therapist what's available and what each one is generally used for. Let them know about any allergies or sensitivities beforehand, and don't be afraid to ask for a lighter application if a scent is strong.

Pairing it with the rest of your visit

Aromatherapy massage pairs naturally with a slower, more relaxation-focused visit — think pool loungers and a quiet afternoon rather than a quick stop between errands.
